Most people associate hemp with modern sustainability trends, hemp paper bags, biodegradable hemp plastics, maybe a hemp T-shirt. And although we love being called new and innovative, we’re simply reinventing what has already been done all throughout history.

For thousands of years, hemp was a cornerstone of civilization.

🧵 It clothed armies.

⛵ It held together sails that connected continents.

📜 And yes, it even helped birth the paper industry in Europe.

Long before wood pulp, early European paper was made from recycled textiles, including hemp, cotton, and linen rags. Old sails, ropes, and uniforms found a second life as pages in books, ledgers, and letters.

The Gutenberg Bible was famously printed on this blend of cotton, linen, and hemp-based paper. And that’s just one small chapter in a much longer story.
